THE WORKSHOP A two day intensive in the traditional Korean technique of throwing off the hump: many consistent forms from a single mass of clay, with body mechanics that reduce physical strain. January 30 and 31, 2027 9:30 am to 2:30 pm, five hours per day. Lunch from 12:00 to 12:45 pm. Vegetarian lunch provided along with tea & coffee. There is a microwave and fridge so you are also welcome to bring along any additional items (food or drinks) as required Yoon Hee Kim, Yoon Lab Ceramics Throwing Off the Hump (Foundation). Learn Korean production throwing to create multiple consistent forms from a single mound of clay while building the skills for future Moon Jar making. Prerequisite: Comfortable throwing small cups and bowls. What students will learn: The workshop builds the fundamental skills behind traditional Korean Moon Jar making, and an understanding of the philosophy behind the form. Centering and throwing off the hump Producing consistent cups, bowls, vases and small Moon Jars A brief history and philosophy of the Korean Moon Jar Making and using custom measuring tools to create consistent forms. Removing pieces from the hump without distortion Developing an efficient, sustainable throwing workflow Yoon Hee Kim is a Korean ceramic artist specializing in traditional Korean wheel throwing techniques and Moon Jar making. After earning a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York, she spent three intensive years training with master potters in South Korea. Today, her ceramic practice spans over a decade and is shaped by a deep appreciation for the philosophy, efficiency and craftsmanship of Korean ceramics.
